Tough Day For Microsoft

January 2nd, 2009

More information can be found at the links provided, but Microsoft is not starting the year off strong. Most media outlets led with a story about how the Zune, Microsoft’s digital music player, was hit with a glitch in how its internal clock accounts for leap year. Then, it’s industry leading web browser, Internet Explorer, lost some major market share. An unfortunate start to 2009 for Microsoft.

New Google and T-Mobile Phone and YOUR thoughts

September 24th, 2008

I read (and even commented) Om Malik’s piece about the new Google Phone. I personally think he was a little harsh on the ol’ Android platform rebuking it’s philosophy of openness when in fact technical hurdles are more to blame.

I also started an online video conversation to see what you thought. I’ll include that below.

More to come on the Google phone for sure and I’ll be sure to keep you updated.

Google Phone. Thoughts? What do people think of the joint announcement yesterday by google and t-mobile?

How-To Make Gmail and a Blackberry Play Nice

July 13th, 2008

Using Gmail on any Blackberry has been pretty annoying. I always got a bunch of extranious emails and it would send my replies as new messages to my blackberry. I’ve met a few people with this same problem and this is how we’ve all solved it:

It’s unfortunate, but it’s best just to disable email service from Blackberry for your Gmail account. You’ll need to login to your Blackberry service and sever the connection between Blackberry and Gmail. Fear not, for all is not lost! You’ll still get notifications when you receive new emails.

The next step is to go to Google’s mobile products home page and download their Gmail application. This will take just a few seconds to download and install.

After it’s been installed, simply go to your Blackberry’s application folder and find the newly installed Gmail application. Click on it to launch it and feed it your login credentials. It should log you straight into your gmail account and work just as it does from the web. Best of all, you can adjust the settings to notify you when you get new messages so it feels just like your normal Blackberry email.

HOWTO: Connect AOL DSL to a Linksys Router

December 27th, 2007

To connect your AOL high speed internet service to a router is fairly simple if you have good information. AOL tech support gave me some bad advice in the beginning which caused me about an hour of headache before I called them back. To connect takes a couple of AOL specific setup instructions which I’ll show you here:

  1. Log into your Linksys router. To do this, open a web browserand type: http://192.168.1.1 an authentication box will open and you willneed to type in admin for the username and admin for the password.
  2. Once logged in, you will need to change the Internet Connection Type to PPPoE. This is only if you are using a DSL connection
  3. You will need to set a User name and Password. Both are the phone number you use to dial your DSL connection (probably your home number). The user name is your phone number @ aol-hs while the password is just your phone number. An example user name and password would be: u:5035552424@aol-hs p: 5035552424 . The other settings are pre-set and work fine. You can click on the picture above for more detail.
  4. The next step is to actually initiate the connection. Click on the Status tab at the top of the screen. In the middle of the page, you will need to click the connect button. The router will attempt to connect to your DSL service. This may take a couple of minutes. If you entered the user name and password correctly, the router should connect and everything should be useable. After the login succeeds, the Login Status will show “Connected” and you should be connected to the Internet.
Please feel free to post questions in the comments if you run into any trouble.
